Zdrastvuite Lev Kobrin,
I value your advice and thank you in advance for answering my questions.
1. I am in US almost 12 years now, won asylum from Ukraine, have a greencard (permanent resident since 2 years ago). So about 4 more years before I can get US citizenship.
I want to travel to Ukraine to see my grandpa cause she won´t last 4 years. I heard I can have problems with ins upon return, and also in the future having to expain why I went during citizenship interview. What is your recommendation regarding travel to the country of persecution? I do not want to do anything that affects my legal status in the US, but it is kind of messed up that I can´t see my grandparents for 16 years....
2. If I do go, is it ok to travel on reentry permit, with a visa from ukraine, or is it a bad idea? I also heard getting a passport from Ukraine is a big no no...

1) returning to the country of persecution applies only to asylee/refugee status. In your case, you are a permanent resident, and US CIS should not ask you questions regarding this issue. However, if you are afraid for some unpredictable curcumstances, you can travel to Russia, and then..... you know what to do then. On the other hand, it depends upon validity of your Ukrainian passport.
2) travel passport is good anyway, particularly if you plan to stay there more than one year. That concerns to visa, the Ukrainian consulate will probably deny your application since you have not been deprived of Ukrainian citizenship. As I heard, to receive a new Ukrainian passport, if you are a green card holder, is not a big deal. Call them and ask.
Remember that time you are out of country will be substracted from your 5-year waiting period for citizenship.
